Carmen and Juan waited across the street from Hammer Garson’s house. His car was parked in front of the house. Finally he came out and started walking down the street. He looked very mean, and never smiled.
The children followed him. They were sure he was going to set another fire. To their surprise, though, he stopped at the movie theater, bought a ticket and went in.
Carmen and Juan also bought tickets and went in. They had already seen the movie and didn’t like it very much even the first time.
Finally the movie was over and Hammer Garson left the theater. They ran out after him. But they couldn’t see him. They looked up and down the street, but there was no sign of the young man.
They felt very disappointed and started back home. Suddenly Hammer Garson came behind them and pushed them against the wall. “Why are you following me?” he shouted.
The kids were afraid. They did not answer. Hammer was very angry. “Look”, he said, “I know about your father and about my cap. I know you think I started the fire! But I didn’t do it! I just want to be like anyone else!
The children were thinking if they should believe him when suddenly they heard the fire alarm.
Captain Donovan and his firefighters raced to Maple Street again. This time it was an empty store. Once again it looked like an arson job.
Then the roof of the house next door caught fire! There were two parents and two children inside. The firemen got them out into the street.
There was a gas station next to the store. All of a sudden a piece of burning wood fell on one of the pumps. There was a flash, a loud noise, and more flames rose into the sky. The station had caught fire. “Get the people back!” shouted Donovan. “The station is going to blow up!”
